Questions about weighted duvets

What is a weighted duvet?

These are duvets and blankets with additional weight (3-16kg). This additional weight creates pressure on the skin that feels similar to a soft embrace. It’s scientifically proven that deep pressure stimulation (DPS) activates deep skin receptors, making them signal for the release of feel-good hormones.

This results in deep relaxation and better sleep. For both good and troubled sleepers. DPS is achieved with the use of weighted duvets, which is probably why so many people experience calming and sleep-improving effects.

What does the research say about weighted duvets?

A new study from Uppsala University shows that the use of a weighted duvet increases melatonin in healthy young adults at bedtime. Secretion of the hormone melatonin signals to the body that it's time to sleep, and this can help increase sleepiness. Read more here.

Another recent published scientific studies (published 2020), conclude that weighted duvets effectively treat insomnia for patients with major depression, bipolar disorder, and generalised anxiety disorder and ADHD, among others. The study was funded by the City of Stockholm and conducted by Karolinska Institutet, and is the first placebo-controlled study in the field

The results showed the following effects in patients who used a weighted duvet:

  • Improved sleep
  • Increased physical activity during the day
  • Reduced symptoms of fatigue, depression and anxiety disorders

Why should I sleep under a weighted duvet?

Because weighted duvets and blankets can improve sleep and help release anxiety and restlessness, they have been used in healthcare in Sweden for over 15 years. For example, for children with neuropsychiatric disabilities, and for adults with severe sleep deprivation.

Towards the end of 2016 weighted duvets and weighted blankets became available to regular consumers in the USA. And soon millions of Americans were sleeping soundly under their weighted duvets. The same progress is evident in Europe, with the Scandinavian countries - and CURA of Sweden specifically - taking the lead.

90% of our consumers experience better sleep with a CURA duvet. We hope you will sleep better too.

How do I use the weighted duvet?

You can use your weighted duvet/blanket in the same way as a normal blanket or duvet. The difference lies in the added weight (3-16 kg). You can also use the duvet or blanket over specific parts of your body. For example to relax your shoulders or legs.

How do I use the duvet for the first time?

When you use a weighted duvet or weighted blanket for the first time, we recommend slowly getting your body used to the extra weight.

Use the duvet or blanket for shorter periods of time, in the beginning. For example, begin with 10 to 15 minutes before getting into bed.

Gradually increase the time frame until it feels comfortable to sleep with the duvet/blanket through the night. The acclimatisation period can vary and last from one eveing to a few weeks. We recommend using the blanket for at least 10 minutes in the beginning to get the relaxing effect.

Are duvet covers used with weighted duvets?

Our weighted duvets can be used with or without a duvet cover and it is of course a matter of taste. However, as it is easier to wash a duvet cover than a whole duvet, we recommend duvet covers for our duvets.

How do I make a bed with a weighted duvet?

You can use a duvet with a duvet cover, which is common in Europe, or with a sheet, which is common in the USA, for example.

The weight of the duvets can make using the same bedding technique used with a normal duvet a strain on your shoulders and back.

We recommend laying the duvet on a flat surface, and threading the duvet cover on a little at a time.

Our Cover sets are designed with special fastening strings where you attach your duvet to ensure that the duvet stays in place throughout the night. When you buy our duvets, special instructions are included on how to attach the duvet and duvet together.

What is the difference between a weighted duvet and a normal duvet?

A weighted duvet is similar to the traditional duvets on the market, the only difference is it has additional weight (3-16kg). This additional weight is created by adding tiny glass pearls to the filling of the duvet. The pearls are evenly distributed within the duvet and do not make a sound.

People can use the weighted duvets with a duvet cover (as is typical in Europe), or with a sheet (as is typical in the USA). If you use a duvet cover you may find that your weighted duvet moves a bit within the cover (due to the weight of the duvet). To help out, CURA’s weighted duvets and cover sets have special loops that you can tie together to keep the duvet neatly within.

86% of our consumers consider the CURA weighted duvet more comfortable than their previous duvet.

We hope you sleep well.

How do I get used to the weight?

We recommend letting your body get used to the extra weight of a weighted duvet over a period of time. This means starting with the weighted duvet or blanket for a shorter period of time, for example 10 to 15 minutes on the sofa or bed. Increase the time gradually until you feel comfortable sleeping a full night. The adjustment time can vary from person to person and can take anywhere from one evening to a few weeks. We recommend starting with at least 10 minutes on the first occasion to achieve a relaxing effect.

What is the difference between a weighted duvet and a weighted blanket?

A weighted duvet is similar to the traditional duvet, but with additional weight 3-16kg. These are most often used in a bed, to sleep under. CURAs weighted duvets have a cotton outer layer. And are made with a filling of natural honed glass pearls, combined with either down feathers, cotton or polyester filling. The filling is sewn into place in a grid pattern to ensure even distribution of the weight and great comfort for the sleeper. Weighted duvets are most often used in combination with a duvet cover or sheet.

A weighted blanket is a blanket with additional weight (6-7kg). These are most often used on the couch, chair or on the bed, to relax (and sleep) under. At CURA these are made with an outer layer of soft materials, and do not require a cover. The filling also consists of natural honed glass pearls that are evenly distributed within the blanket for the comfort during relaxation.

Both CURA’s weighted duvets and weighted blankets are machine washable. Please see each product’s care instructions for details.

What are the differences between CURA’s weighted duvets?

CURA Pearl Classic is the most popular weighted duvet in Europe. It is a duvet with a cotton outer layer and polyester wadding. Its breathability is good. And despite its weight the Pearl Classic has a low TOG value (2.7) ensuring a suitable temperature all year round for most people.

CURA Pearl Eco is our 100% natural weighted duvet. The outer layer is made of organic cotton, and the filling is cotton instead of polyester. This enhances the breathability of the duvet and makes it slightly warmer (TOG value 4.16) and fluffier than the Pearl Classic. The Pearl Eco comes in a cotton canvas bag for storage, transport or simply as a nice shopping bag.

CURA Pearl Cotton Eco is our 100% natural weighted duvet. With an outer material of organic cotton, and cotton padding instead of polyester, this duvet has very good breathability, and is slightly fluffier than our other duvets.

CURA Pearl Down is one of our newest member. This is a unique weighted duvet with seven layers, two of which are down. Outer fabric and inner layer in cotton, padding in 75% duck down and 25% feathers of a total of 600 grams. Weight from glass beads. Pearl Down is a weighted duvet with a perfect balance between functionality and wonderful fluffiness.

CURA Pearl Lyocell is a cool weighted duvet and is perfect for the summer months or for those looking for a cooler duvet all year round. The weight comes from five layers of glass beads that create an even and gentle pressure on your body, which can help you relax and improve your sleep. The outer fabric and soft filling are made of 100% lyocell. Lyocell is a ventilating material that is much more breathable than, for example, cotton. Lyocell as a textile feels silky smooth and comfortable against your skin while having moisture wicking properties that keep you dry and comfortable all night.

Can children use the weighted duvets from CURA?

Yes. Children may prefer to sleep with a weighted duvet, especially if they have difficulty calming down or experience restlessness. We recommend that the weight of the weighted duvet is based on the age of the child, as the weight is distributed over a smaller area of the body.

CURA of Sweden recommends the following weights for children:

• 3-4 years: 3 kg

• 5-6 years: 5 kg

• 7-14 years: 7 kg

We do not recommend the use of weighted duvets for children under 3 years of age, as the child should always be able to remove the duvet without assistance.

How do I choose the right weight?

What weight to choose varies for each individual. The severity of sleep problems and/or anxiety plays an important role as well. The ground rule is to choose a weight that you calculate from your own body weight. CURA of Sweden recommends that you choose a duvet equivalent to 10 -15% of your body weight. This is, however, just a recommendation.

YOUR NEEDS

The choice of weight also depends on your needs. Sometimes you might want to choose a heavier duvet to enjoy desired effects.

SLEEP PROBLEMS

If you suffer from serious sleep problems and/or anxiety, it might be a good idea to choose a heavier duvet.

MILDER SLEEP PROBLEMS

If you experience milder difficulty sleeping or have problems with the neck, back and joints, a slightly lighter duvet could be a better choice for you.

What are weighted duvets made of?

CURA of Sweden is unique in that we offer different types of weighted duvets and weighted blankets, made with different combinations of materials. Below you can see an overview of materials used per weighted duvet or weighted blanket.

Will I get too warm under a weighted duvet?

The extra weight does not necessarily mean extra warmth. The polished beads of natural quartz sand, responsible for the excess weight,  do not provide insulating properties. That is why the padding (down, cotton or polyester) is crucial for the warmth of the duvet or blanket.

CURA's different weighted duvets perform in different ways when it comes to temperature. All our weighted duvets and weighted blankets are tested by RISE (Research Institue of Sweden) and is provided with a TOG value - a standardised value for the thermal resistance of textiles. For example, our most popular weighted duvet, CURA Pearl Classic, has a TOG value of 2.7 and therefore ensures a comfortable temperature for most people all year round.

Can I wash my weighted duvet or weighted blanket?

Yes! All CURA  weighted duvets and weighted blankets are machine washable.

None of the CURA Pearl models nor the blankets may be tumble dried or ironed. We recommend air-drying at room temperature or outdoors. Both the blankets and duvets should always be stretched after washing.

All CURA Pearl models and blankets can be dry-cleaned, but not in chemicals stronger than perchloroethylene. Do not bleach.

Find out more in our wash guide.

Do the pearls in the weighted duvets make noise when I move?

No, the glass pearls in our duvets and blankets do not make noise when you move or move the duvet/ blanket. Apart from the extra weight, you will not feel the pearls.

Is it safe to sleep under a weighted duvet?

Yes, weighted duvets and blankets are safe to sleep with. CURA weighted duvets should be used for their intended purpose and as advised when purchased, and that the weighted duvet/weighted blanket should not be heavier than the user can handle by themselves. If you suffer from seriously impaired heart or lung capacity, impaired muscle function or increased susceptibility to pressure ulcers, you should consult your doctor before using a weighted duvet.

We do not recommend weighted blankets for children under 3 years of age, as it is important that the child is able to remove the blanket from the body.

Can I use a weighted duvet when I am pregnant?

Yes. Many women can experience sleep problems during pregnancy and the CURA duvet can serve as a natural aid for better and more restful sleep.

CURA always recommends consultation with your midwife if you are unsure about use and choice of weight.

Do I need a special cover set for my weighted duvet?

You are free to use a ‘regular’ cover set. However, because of the additional weight some people find that the duvets can move more within the duvet cover than with an unweighted duvet. To keep the weighted duvet in place, we have special duvet covers with easy attachment ribbons inside. These can be attached to the special loops on the weighted duvets. In this way the two will be inseparable until you decide it’s time to detach them (for the wash).

We are continuously working on making our assortment better, so please stay tuned to developments on our special covers.

Does my weighted duvet / weighted blanket come with a warranty?

Every CURA weighted duvet and blanket comes with a 3-year warranty. Please keep your receipt of purchase to validate your product’s warranty.
