How to use your weighted duvet: choose, make & wash

CURA of Sweden bedroom — ultimate guide to better sleep

A weighted duvet can transform your sleep — but only when you pick the right weight, make the bed correctly and care for it the right way. This guide covers everything: choosing the weight that suits you, a step-by-step bedding method for specially designed covers, and how to wash and freshen your duvet so it lasts for years.

Choosing the right weight

The basic rule: start from your body weight. For most adults, a duvet weighing 10–15% of body weight gives the best calming effect.

The ideal weight also depends on your height and on how much you struggle with stress, worry, anxiety or sleep problems. If your needs are more severe, a slightly heavier duvet may feel better; if your neck, joints or back bother you, go a little lighter.

Weight guide for adults

  • 40–50 kg → 5 kg duvet
  • 50–65 kg → 6–7 kg duvet
  • 65–80 kg → 8–9 kg duvet
  • 80–90 kg → 10–12 kg duvet
  • 90+ kg → 13+ kg duvet

Weight guide for children

Because a child's body is smaller, the duvet's weight is distributed across less surface area. Start from the child's age rather than body weight:

  • 3–4 years → 3–5 kg duvet
  • 5–6 years → 5–7 kg duvet
  • 7–14 years → 7–9 kg duvet

We do not recommend weighted duvets for children under 3 years of age — the child needs to be able to push the duvet off on their own.

Weighted duvets during pregnancy

Many women experience sleep problems during pregnancy — some early on, others towards the end. A CURA duvet can help you relax and drift off more easily in both cases. If you're unsure about the weight, err on the lighter side and consult your midwife if you have concerns.

Getting used to the weight

If this is your first weighted duvet, let your body adjust gradually. Start with short sessions — at least ten minutes so the calming effect has time to set in — and build up to full-night use. Everyone adjusts differently; some need one night, others a couple of weeks.

You can also drape the duvet over your shoulders or knees on the sofa for a relaxing pressure before bedtime, or try one of our weighted blankets as a lighter alternative.

Making the bed with a weighted duvet

Because weighted duvets are heavier than regular duvets, a bit of technique goes a long way — both to save your shoulders and to keep the duvet evenly distributed inside the cover.

With or without a duvet cover?

It's a matter of taste, but because a cover is much easier to wash than an entire weighted duvet, we strongly recommend using one. CURA duvets always come with matching pillowcases, and we offer specially designed duvet covers in cotton, Satina and Tencel™ lyocell, in a range of colours and sizes.

The CURA fastening system

Because of the extra weight, a duvet can shift inside a standard cover. Our covers are fitted with laces that attach to loops on the duvet itself, so everything stays in place. Every CURA cover ships with step-by-step instructions.

Step-by-step: how to make the bed

  1. Lay the duvet flat on the bed or floor so it is evenly distributed.
  2. Turn the duvet cover inside out so the fasteners are on the outside.
  3. Place the inside-out cover on top of the duvet with the zipper facing down.
  4. Tie the cover's laces to the loops on the top short side and on both long sides. Leave the bottom short side open for now.
  5. Carefully turn the cover the right way out, working one section at a time from each long side until the whole cover is flipped.
  6. Tie the last laces on the bottom short side and close the zipper.

Tip: keep the duvet on a flat surface and slide the cover on bit by bit rather than lifting the whole thing — it's much easier on your shoulders and back.

Washing and caring for your weighted duvet

All CURA weighted duvets are washable. Follow the advice below to keep yours in top shape for years.

Machine washing

  • CURA Pearl Classic, Pearl Eco, Pearl Cotton Eco: machine wash at 60 °C, low-speed spin.
  • CURA Pearl Down, Pearl Basic: machine wash at 40 °C.
  • Do not tumble dry and do not iron.
  • Dry at room temperature or outdoors, fully stretched out in all directions so the filling stays evenly distributed.
  • Do not use bleach. Dry cleaning is possible but only with chemicals no stronger than perchloroethylene.

Freezing as an alternative to washing

In winter you can freshen your duvet by hanging it on the balcony or laying it in the snow when the temperature drops below freezing. Cold kills bacteria and mites without putting the duvet through a full wash cycle.

Wash the cover more often than the duvet

The easiest way to keep your bed fresh is to wash the cover frequently and save the full duvet wash for a handful of times a year. Another reason to use a duvet cover.

Everyday use and next steps

There is no single right way to use a weighted duvet. Most customers use theirs every night; others only reach for it on restless nights or as an extra blanket on the sofa. The important thing is consistency and comfort — your body will tell you what works.
