– You often use BMI to evaluate the degree of overweight and obesity. BMI is the weight in kilograms divided by the length in meters raised by two. On a calculator, you can easily calculate your BMI by taking the weight in kilograms and dividing the length into meters and then dividing the length in meters once more. If you weigh 100 kgs and are 170 cms tall, the BMI 100 is divided by 1.7 divided by 1.7 again = 34.6. One should use single BMI values with common sense. BMI becomes higher for tall individuals and one´s weight depends not only on the amount of fat, but BMI also varies according to the amount of muscle you have.

– Obesity is having such a high level of extra fat in the body that it is considered a disease. This means that the risk of having different sequelae associated with extra fat in the body is so great that it is important for most people to reduce weight.
Is overweight and obesity as dangerous to all?
– No, how harmful extra fat is varies, depending on what other predispositions you have and on your lifestyle in general. A person who is physically active is able to do a lot better, and what kind of diet you have also has an influence. For individuals from Asian countries, the risk of increased BMI is higher than for Westerners.
Is obesity and obesity as dangerous regardless of age?
– Overweight and obesity are more serious when it affects younger ones. Moderate obesity after the age of 65 is probably harmless to most unless you have a strong predisposition to develop type two diabetes. Still, sedentary and inactivity is dangerous at all ages.

Is the weigh affected by sleep disorders?
– Yes, worrying sleep or too little sleep increases hunger feelings and makes it easier to gain weight.
Can you avoid gaining weight from bad sleep?
– Yes, the only thing you gain weight from is eating more than you need. If you make sure you do not eat too much you don´t gain weight.
Does obesity affect the risk of sleep disorders?
– Yes, obesity leads to increased risk of anxious sleep.
Does obesity affect the risk of snoring?
– Snoring increases if you suffer from overweight and obesity. It doesn´t mean that weight loss is a guarantee that snoring ends – but the chances are good!
Does obesity affect the risk of sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep)?
– Obesity leads to a significantly increased risk of sleep apnea and the risks increase with the degree of obesity. This is a serious condition and it´s important to seek help for it.
Does sleep disorders affect the risks of obesity associated with overweight and obesity?
– Sleep problems increase the risk of the same diseases that obesity leads to, ie hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Sleep disturbances thus risk worsening these diseases.
Does weight loss affect sleep?
– Sleep quality increases by weight loss. Many also feel that you get more energy in the daytime after losing weight. If you have sleep apnea, that’s a very good reason to try to lose weight.
Does sleep affect the ability to lose weight?
– You might think you’re using up more calories if you’re awake longer but too little sleep makes it harder to lose weight. On the other hand, a good sleep doesn´t make the weight go down by itself – you have to eat less and move more!
Does the temperature in the bedroom affect sleep for those who suffer from obesity?
A low temperature in the room (16-18 degrees Centigrade) improves sleep for most people. This is probably even more important for those who suffer from obesity.
How does weight loss affect sleep for overweight and obese people?
– The scientific evidence isn´t strong, but there is no evidence that the effect would differ for those with moderate obesity.
Are there any risks for those with obesity using weighted blankets?
– There is no indication that there are any risks. As far as I know, sleep apnea (see above) is not specifically investigated. If you suffer from sleep apnea, you should seek medical help, and then discuss the use of weighted blankets with a health care representative.
Can weighted blankets increase the ability to lose weight?
– There is no scientific evidence for this. But if the weighted blanket makes you sleep better, the daily fatigue is reduced, which in turn can increase the ability to succeed with your weight loss.
